Jazz – gatunek muzyczny, który powstał w pierwszej połowie XX wieku na południu Stanów Zjednoczonych (w Nowym Orleanie)pod wpływem muzyki czarnych niewolników. Charakteryzuje siê rytmem synkopowanym, a także dużč dowolnoœcič interpretacyjnč i aranżacyjnč oraz tendencjč do improwizacji. Miało to zwičzek z faktem, iż twórcami tego gatunku byli przeważnie nie znajčcy nut, potomkowie tychże czarnych niewolników. Według niektórych muzykologów jest raczej formč interpretacji niż stylem muzycznym.
